Ceveran

“Something seems off-putting. Perhaps it’s her unusual eyes, or her overly couth mannerisms. There’s just a sterile aura about these people.”

-Glass’s first contact with ceveran

Ceveran (seh•ver•en) are a tall, but slender cervid-like species that dominates much of Qoth’s population.

Physiology

Ceveran are typically tall and slender, with short fur that varies in color from brown to grey to cream. They have the ability to grow longer head fluff, which changes color as it lengthens. Eye color is usually blue, though grey and pale green are also common.

Male ceverans are distinguished by their antlers, which can have more than five points. The size and shape of the antlers vary among different speculative subspecies and are a significant factor in mate selection, with larger and more elaborate antlers being highly desirable.

Early Ceveran looked vastly different than their modern Qothic counterparts, known as “High Ceveran”. Such examples can be found in Siltria, as many native ceverans are characterized by darker antlers, brown eyes, and shorter statures.

This contrast in appearance is the result of Qoth’s long history of selective breeding, often state mandated by Ceveran administrations. These programs have led to most Qothic Ceverans possessing lighter eye colors, brighter fur, taller builds, and more impressive antlers. However, the effects of selective breeding have also been detrimental: Qoths are generally more prone to violence, and their immune systems have been weakened, making them more susceptible to frequent plagues that ravage the empire. Despite known to be able to live longer lives than the average, Ceveran usually die earlier for these reasons.

And despite all the efforts to make the perfect image of a High Ceveran, there is a growing trend with Qothic Ceveran finding their traditional Siltrian counterparts attractive, leading to many High Ceveran to tan and dye their fur to make it darker.

Personality

Ceverans are most notable for a strong admiration of social standing and honor, whether through martial prowess or administrative efficacy. Much attention is spent on their appearance and manners, a trait that is important in Qothic society. As a result, Ceveran are often characterized by their arrogance, snobbish attitude and being easily offended.

For males, antler size is a big source of physical ego and many consider being forcefully shed a fate worse than death.

Society

Ceverans are known to hold numerous noble and administrative positions in Qoth, and they will not hesitate to remind others of their prestigious credentials if their status is questioned. They also have a long-standing tradition of engaging in duels, often over trivial matters. Duels among them were only recently outlawed within the military, following the ridiculously high number of Qothic officers who perished at the hands of their own comrades.
