Appearance

Sawbacks are among the largest amphibians in Gnomanya. They spend most of their day living underwater, but come out on land to hunt during the night or overcast. Their diet consists of fish, insects, earthworms, crustaceans, and unlucky people. Their bodies are wide and almost flat with a very long tail that it uses as a fin in water and to slither on land. Sawbacks also possess a neural spine with a serrated-like appearance, hence the name. They have a slimy coat over their skin, of which can range from cryptic colors to pale-pink.

Sawbacks have poor eye sight, and rely on the two distinct barbels at the end of their snouts used for detecting movement and water splashes in shallow and deep, murky water. Any disturbance in the water and the sawback will immediately charge and catch its prey via englufment. The creature can snap its jaw shut in the blink of an eye.

Behavior

The Unyielding Bastards had difficulties with construction due to drawing the ire of many territorial sawbacks, and learned that these creatures hunt purely by stimuli. Given their size, ability to lay thousands of eggs at a time, and predictable attraction to vibrations in the water, they have been exploited as a primary food source for the Bastards.
