64: Community Service

Hira says:

Hellooo, anyone there? Blink twice if you’ve processed the recent massacre yet!

You’re fine. You’ve seen people die before, it’s just that you never stuck around to hang out with the killers.

Ghor says:

“Keep doing what you’re doing”, what exactly is it that you’re doing?

According to Kivari? Community service.

Snek_Inna_Tenk says:

Hang on. Putting aside your true allegiances, there are people in there who know you’re coming, and may be armed and waiting for exactly what your best friend in this bunch is about to do. Say as much. Perhaps there are safer means of egress- if you’re vindicated, you may win a bit more trust.

You speak up, “Hey—are you sure this is the safest way to get in? They might’ve had—”

Shut up.

“Yen, do it.”

“No heretics down here, Sister!” Yenkaran calls from below.

“Damn it, Yen. Get back up here.”

After Yenkaran comes back up the stairs, Effrenka pulls out a hacksaw. “Start bagging,” she says promptly, “Freckles, come with me below deck.”

You follow down the stairs behind her, paying mind to not trip over the mess Yenkaran made.

As you make it below deck, you are hit with the scent of gunpowder. The Gormutt scrapes her helmet on the ceiling.

Scurrying past the gundeck and into the cargo hold, you begin to rifle through the various crates, bags and jars, making a mess of this cramped space. You only find boxes of nails, candles, even some earthenware. Nothing else. Though while you found some powder for the ship’s guns, there’s nothing down here that indicates a proper weapons cache. Effrenka chucks some of the crate lids across the room, muttering in a different language.

You glance over your shoulder to notice her tail is frazzled.

She approaches you, then hands you the Key Ring she pilfered. “T-Try these on the door. I’m gonna check on Yenkaran.” You notice a shortness of breath to her words.

“You want me to check that room by myself?”

“Freckles, honestly I don’t care— they’re your toys, so find them or not.” She drops the keys into your hand, “I don’t want to be here.” The Gormutt seems less composed now.

“Effrenka? Are you—”

“Shut up— just— give me a second,” she turns around and scampers off, clawing at her chin strap. “G-Get off me.

These people are weirdos.

You’re going to find those weapons. No way in hell you’re leaving empty handed.

You unlock the door and open it.

The Circle thinks their immune from their own philosophy? That they can’t be hunted and eaten? Get a load of this: From the Saudi Gazette from 2013: ‘Abdulraheem Al-Otaibi said he loves eating hyena meat, as it has a special taste which distinguishes it from other animals. “Hyena meat has a unique taste and has an effect that is stronger than well-known aphrodisiacs.”’ From Gear Junkie from 2021: ‘In both hunting circles and beyond, ideas of certain animals being more or less edible than others are pretty darned pervasive. In some homes, that even begins at venison. The reality is… Read more »

Loving your story so far, been compulsively checking for updates. You have me excited in the way I used to be for Prequel! I hope that is as high praise for you as it is from me!

Same. Seeing another Tinderkell update is something I look forward to. I just starting to watch it one day and got hooked. Honestly, I think it might have scratched an itch for an ongoing fantasy story for me to engage with (through the community and fan fiction). The last story that did this was Wings of Fire by Tui T Sutherland (I’ve mentioned this before). Wings of fire and Tinderkell have a very similar vibe – I don’t know why. Could be because of the violence (Wings of Fire is infamous for how brutal it is being a young teen’s… Read more »

Great work. But may I ask why a lot of your Savco work is slowly disappearing

Don’t take my word for it, but I think that Yitexity said that SAVCO is on hiatus. Also, maybe he just got tired of focusing on the same thing. Tinderkell is a new, fresh story unchained to the bounds of fan fiction; he can do whatever he wants with it, not having to rely on Zootopia to construct the story.

Yeah. I just feel slightly sad that some parts of Savco have just… Vanished. Either way Yitexity has my respect for making both

Yitexity could go back to SAVCO eventually, it’s just they want to focus in this now. And yeah, this story really good. Also, I’ve said this before, but Yitexity might also have plans to reboot SAVCO to make adhere to modern Zootopia lore now that Zootopia 2 has come out. Personally, I would love to see how Yitexity would draw Gary.

Maybe Effi being claustrophobic will help serve to redeem her. It could act to reverse her role as predator to prey. Why do I say this? This might just be what came to my mind, but when I think of claustrophobic one thing that comes to mind is a labyrinth. A tight series of corridors leading around and around, sending the person mad trying to find the exit. In this case, there is one particular labyrinth that comes to mind: the Labyrinth of King Minos – the Minotaur. The basic premise of the story, a man-eating bull beast that stalks… Read more »

No joke, I was reading Tintin and the Cigars of the Pharaohs the other day, and basically the exact same thing – a gunrunner boat and it being rigged to blow – happens in that.

Getting the absolute worst feeling this was all just a clever setup to get rid of two “disagreeable” groups at once.

That what I believed from the start. Kivari is using Glass to get rid of both of them, and then she’s going to get rid of Glass to make sure no one can trace any crime – Glass helping a cult murder people and Glass blowing up a ship – back to her.

This was a theory I had a while ago that I put in ‘Find Your Spark’. It’s relevant to what you’re saying, so I thought I would put it here: Kivari is going to kick Glass to the curb the moment she has exhausted her of her usefulness. I explained this in 48: The LightKeeper. I want to explain in more detail. Kivari is scheming something. In the section on shintarics in the wiki, it is mentioned that Lightkeepers around the Siltra area try to focus the cult on themselves instead of the main priestess in Mandansko. She wants to… Read more »

Do you think that she can actually do that? I was debating that myself. It could be possible… but if she screws up we might as well rename her ‘Shattered Glass’ (I’ll see myself out). Anyway, Glass’s instincts are probably to run for it instead of putting herself in unneeded danger.

Yeah, but look at the speed the fuses are burning at- there’s no way she makes it far enough away to survive the explosion.
…On the other hand, if she successfully cuts the fuses, then the gang gets to abscond with a bunch of… extra-strength fireworks.
On another note, do we think this same setup is what was behind the locked door on the ship back in chapter 1?

I’m not sure fireworks would fit the Circle’s style of hunting. Too loud and chaotic. And yeah, she’ll probably have to run for it. For the chapter 1 thing, well, the caption of this entry is titled “Gnomanyans love Goodies!” so I guess that’s not an unreasonable assumption to make.

Wait! Hang a minute! Hang on one damn minute! Good gravy, it’s just occurred to me that you might be exactly right! That’s why the ship blew up in Chapter 1! It could very well have been another one of the Nerkogos smuggling ships. This also relates to something I thought of: the ship could also have been carrying some of the predators on board (Glass and Iron included) to sell them as slaves.

Damn! Love your fight scenes. Fast, visceral, fatal. Very realistic.

Effrenka knows she got lucky with that parry – I don’t even think it was intentional. On top of that, she’s claustrophobic, so her headspace is in a world of hurt right now.

Gods Damn I love this story.

Is her being claustrophobic going to be a inclusion of chekhov’s gun? Bit far-fetched, but I was thinking if Glass (and Zeb – he’s getting dragged along on her wild ride) needs to find an antidote for the Circle poison or get information out of them later that she goes and gets it from Effi. To make her talk, Glass and Zeb throw her in a tight space for a time until she goes crazy.

it was a lucky parry alright, if you frame by frame it, it never actually touched her sword it hit her helmet and glanced off.

“The White Hunter with the Busted Headlamp scoffs at you, “That’s fantastic to hear because right now she’s starting to remind me of someone we know.“
Considering she’s claustrophobic, was Effi referring to herself when she said in in entry 57? She looked so uncomfortable when Glass came out of the boat hold and then threw up, so could she have been thinking of similar events that happened to her?

Effi’s claustrophobic… is that why she stays to herself in the wild? She can’t stand being in tight spaces? Why is she so claustrophobic? Is it because of her specific species? Are they naturally claustrophobic? Or did something happen to her that made her hate tight spaces?

That saw that Effi gave to Yen… look at the head on the pommel. It looked like a dinosaur, like a T.Rex or raptor. Hmmm….. does that mean that the Circle – the mammalian Circle – is descended from some ancient dinosaur cult?

Thinking about it again, that might be a bit of a stretch. Though, that clearly is a reptilian head. What do you guys think it means? Foreshadowing reptiles in the story? Do they worship reptilian gods, or did reptilians found the Circle?

Just commenting on the possible dinosaur thing, I’m really excited to see where that goes. In all honesty, if it was the dinosaurs who founded the Circle, they probably have very, VERY different worldview compared to the mammals given the parameters of their setting. Also, I think it’s highly likely that any dinosaur still in existence would be absolutely disgusted by the idea of a gaggle of mammals calling themselves the Circle. For one, I imagine that the dinosaurs view themselves as the superior lifeform over mammals, and just to see how low and pathetic the organisation now is would… Read more »

If any still existing dinosaurs did meet the current Circle, this is probably how’d they react:

Dinosaur Hunter: And not some weak, sniveling pussy, starved for attention. But there’s no fixing that now.
Yen: Weak? I’m you.
Dinosaur Hunter: I know. You’re a fucking disappointment.
