The following is a passage from a study conducted by the Sorya High Islands located in Ouanora. Translated from Kualassi script.

Island: Meyorugan VI

Location: Greater Aiyana Reef

Discovery: A floating, wooden structure was spotted under a rogue seastack in the Aiyana Reef. Upon closer inspection, we found that the structure was an upturned outrigger hull of unknown make, with sails and rigging long since rotted away. We went to the nearest island and landed on Meyorugan VI.

Description: Uncharacteristic of sibling islands in the region, the island is found to be mostly barren with little useful vegetation or land-based fauna. Further exploration found remnants of early waystones and depressions in the ground suggesting settlement from the Dark Ocean Period to the Early Discovery Period, dating these artifacts anywhere from 800-1000 years old. Excavations revealed a plethora of iron tools such as handsaws, knives, axes, harpoon tips, and even spare pieces from a rig, with timber that has shown zero signs of rot or petrification. We later found that the rogue outrigger might’ve originated from this island centuries ago.

Examination of regional records show that the island’s distance to the rest of the Meyorugan Chain delayed its discovery, and as for the chain itself, the only noteworthy piece of history is its period of renown for a prominent shipbuilding dynasty known as the Meyori Reef Gliders, who were known outside of their chain, unusual during a period of wholesale isolation.

We engaged in some talks about the Reef Gliders to Meyori locals of the chain. One had claimed that their rig was originally a Gliders’s make that has been used and modified by their village for generations. He was told by his own father to never tamper with its “blessed bark”, the timber that stood the only original piece. We were certain that it was the same type of timber that had been dug up on Meyorugan VI.

After discovering a historical decline of a shipwright on Meyorugan II, we found it correlated to the abandonment of Meyorugan VI. Our assumption is that this “blessed bark” and the rise of the Gliders can be attributed to the discovery of a now extinct tree that grew on Meyorugan VI. Its fibers were repellant to the natural world, exhibiting an outer appearance of burnt, desiccate wood, while still being strangely spry. As a result, we theorize that this secret commodity was zealously abused for fortune leading to a total collapse of the ecosphere that doomed Meyorugan VI. And regarding its inhabitants, it’s likely they abandoned the island and migrated to the others in the chain, as evidence by the lack of remains.

Conclusion: Resource depletion is a serious concern that threatens our continued existence as a people. As our great natural bounty becomes known to the rest of the world, we must not only safeguard it from outsiders but protect it from ourselves. A proposed remedy is to monitor and investigate those who keep the method of a great craft a secret. Had these secrets been wielded by those who were qualified, perhaps the death of the island would not have even been conceived. As for the supposed tree that possessed this blessed bark, further investigation into the descendants of the Meyori Reef Gliders should be undertaken. Furthermore, expeditions to Meyorugan VI must be considered in the hopes of finding surviving organic material. And if The Spirit blesses us with fair winds, perhaps there still exist seeds to revive this desolate island.
