54: Speak Up

JSam says:

BREATHE, ZEBBY! BREATHE!

You start taking deep breaths, and manage to stifle your panic just for a moment. But you are perhaps one step away from snapping.

ACA says:

Strategically faint!! They can’t question you if you’re unconscious

Unless if the captain suddenly gets a bad nosebleed, you’re condemned to go at this fully awake.

differnet name says:

Take a deep breath with this one, you don’t want to stumble over your words.

You can’t lie very well so don’t. Instead, explain your hesitancy, and try to at least prevent her from getting immediately sent to the noose.

Since you first met Glass, she has not only been a good friend, but risked her own life to save your own. And ever since you were able to talk to her, she gave the impression not as some enigmatic secret Soryan, but a confused woman from what little remains of Gnomanya. She doesn’t have the makings of a spy, only the fight or flight instinct that comes from being in such a lawless land.

At minimum, plead for the captain to give Glass a chance to come forward not by force but by her own will. Not as a declared spy, but as an accused with the right to defend herself.

You say the first thing that comes to your mind. “I-I know it looks bad, but I’m certain she didn’t do these things. I don’t want to be responsible for getting an innocent person hurt. This attack— this spy thing— she’s not a spy. She can’t even read! She saved my life yesterday, despite no benefit to her; she’s not a bad person— not like this. I mean, how can you be so sure you even have the right one?”

“I cannae say. But we can only be certain if we catch her. Rest assured, we will moderate our aggression when the time comes.”

⛏Max8abug ⛏ says:

Ask what will happen to glass when she is caught, perhaps there’s something you can do to help her?

You ask the captain, dreading the answer.

“I’m going tae be honest with ye: this isn’t the city watch’s jurisdiction. We’re no out hunting a lowly brigand. This is a matter of war, and we’re talkin’ a Sorya assassin here. The Confederation tends tae look after their own, and on a normal day, we’d ransom her.

But, given the severity, the Confederation would likely owe us a hundred of our lads or a thousand in urchins. So, seeing how unlikely that is, her odds are honestly quite shite. Like we’re talking execution.

“Oh God no…” your eyes well up again with tears.

“Ack, okay… maybe if she has a good lawyer, and she’s just a normal terrorist… they’d probably be able tae knock her sentence down tae the mines. Well, assuming she doesn’t die of powder-lung after a few months… Shite, there is that.” she mutters.

Tears stream down your cheek.

“Eh… best case scenario, maybe a lifetime in a factory colony? Ye never ken! At least she’d be alive and contributing tae the war reparations program!” she says with an upbeat tone.

Your vision blurs with tears.

“But eh… I dinnae ken. I’m not a qualified barrister. Dinnae— just… eh—forget what I said.”

“Just… probably find yersel new friends soon?”

“But, I dinnae ken.”

TeacupAngel says:

This is hopeless. So many people saw you in the city, the Qoths will find a witness soon. Truth or lie, every word you say now will hurt Glass even more. Just tell the knight lady you went to the Beacon and split up there. Fingers crossed she will assume a good Pasturist like you would never set foot inside.

The captain, noticing your sobbing, speaks up, “Sorry lass, I can see she means lots to ye. If ye dinnae mind me asking… How long have ye known her?”

“I… what’s even the point in all of this?” You sob, “sh-she… W-we were at the beacon, when we split up. I– I’m sorry.”

“Ta.” the captain smiles, “Then we’ll swing by the Beacon. Ye dinnae mind coming with us for a wee while dae ye?”

“Me?”

“Aye, we’ll keep ye right and secure. Dinnae want our key witness losing their brains, naw?”

“Do I even have a choice?”

“That’s a good question. Ye can ride in my Model F if ye’d like.”

The captain gives you a handkercher and beckons you to follow her.

You pray for Glass.

You are now Glass.

Alright, that was about a dozen Qothic crank engines outside the Beacon, but you think you’re in the clear. From what you’ve overheard, the Covenant seemed very pissed off to see the Qoths trying to search the place. Janko seemed more than happy to go downstairs and ‘entertain’ them until Kivari was ready to send you off with information about the Nanzuul. Sister Roni, after strangely thanking you for your loyalty to the Covenant revealed to you a postern right before some important Qothic official compelled the Beacon to be searched.

It’s nice to finally have folks that got your back, but you’re starting to wonder just why the hell Kivari is moving mountains to protect a simple wretch like you.

But now’s probably not the time to look a gift trampler in the skullcap.

You have work to do: Find this Yenkaran freak in the Blood-Dashed Wharf, spy on his little cult, pass on said information, and return to Kivari with your head still attached.

And then once Iron is free, maybe he can buy you a drink this time.

Man, this would sure be a bad time for Glass to get seen associating with a cannibal cult…

What’s that thing being hung in the courtyard? It seems like something important.
